21-Day Happiness Challenge

I've hit a slump. After 3 years in the Philippines, I find myself focusing on the challenges - infrastructure, traffic, pollution - instead of trying to enjoy this unique experience living in a foreign country. There are definitely positives to living here. I have never lived anywhere where people laugh or smile more. Makes me think, why am I not smiling more, too? Then I stumbled upon three stories that really resonated with me.

The first is a TED Talk by Shawn Anchor.

Instead of just talking about how cool it would be to just be happy, he challenges us to try 5 activities for 21 days to re-wire our brains to be more positive and optimistic:

1. Three Gratitudes: write down three new things you are grateful for everyday
2. Journaling: write about one positive thing you have experienced in the last 24 hours to allow your brain to relive the experience
3. Exercise: to teach your brain that behavior matters
4. Meditation: to allow your brain to focus on just one thing in the present
5. Random Acts of Kindness: write one email thanking or praising someone in your social network everyday

Then I read an article in the NY Times about the problem with positive thinking.  Basically, the author argues that your brain gets lazy if you are overly optimistic, and instead you should use "mental contrasting," where you first imagine reaching your goal, then spend a few minutes imaginging the challenges you will have to overcome to reach it.

Finally, I read an article in this month's Foreign Service Journal. Although the article, "Flying Monkeys in an Embassy" was calling me, I read a letter from a mother to her children instead. In the "Letter to my Global Nomads," three reminders really struck home for me:

1. Be open to the unique gifts each country can give you.
2. Try to find something beautiful in your host country everyday.
3. Find humor in the eccentricities.

According to my resume, I am an action-oriented individual, so I am going to give these ideas a try over the next three weeks and see if I can be rewired.

Cebu City

Although I was in Cebu for a work trip, I managed to squeeze in a little sight seeing. Side note: we stayed at the Parklane instead of the Marriott to save money. If money is not a concern for you, avoid the Parklane. There was nothing special.  And on to the sights.

Magellan's Cross is worth a stop. Wikipedia says it is cased in a protective layer because people were chopping off pieces of the wood. But my local guide said rumor had it the cross is not inside. Who knows? For a fee you can buy a candle and someone does a special dance with it to make your wish come true. I passed.  Just next store is a huge church--Basilica del Santo NiƱo (Church of the Holy Child)--which I did not photograph, but you can see pics and read more here. Apparently the feast every January draws more than a million and the pilgrims sleep in a park. I also heard things get a bit wild with some non-Christian type activities.
The San Diego-Yap House is an interesting place to visit, despite the lack if parking or sidewalk. For $1 a guide lets you touch all the fading antiques, but gives a good tour. Apparently the current owner still sleeps there on the weekend. And put an a/c unit in. Also the street is old. Is that why there are no sidewalks?

And non-history related, Tablea, a chocolate cage with 7 branches in Cebu is amazing. Apparently it is traditional breakfast drink and the owners are bringing back as a gourmet snack and also preserving tradition. Please come to Manila.

Community Service

Every year our office (200+ employees!) organizes an event for our Leadership Day. This year we played sports with Philippine Special Olympians in the morning and did service projects in the afternoon. I signed up for bocce ball as it seemed to require the least skill, and mind you, we were playing outside in direct sunlight. My Philippine counterparts were AMAZING at bocce ball. One girl got her ball within inches of the target ball every time. I wasn't quite as good.
After lunch we split up and my group headed to a home that feeds and educates street children. I was shocked when I realized it was about a 1/4 mile from my house. The kids weren't around so we painted most of the walls white and helped organize the library.
Before
After
I see shocking poverty every day on my way to and from work, and this was a good reminder that anyone can do a lot to help in just a couple hours.

Running February

I'm sorry, it's almost mid-March?! Where the hell did February go? Last I remember I was guiltily feeding my daughter a store bought heart cookie while admiring the hand-made Valentine our housekeeper had labored over. Mom of the year. Sorry other moms, better luck next year.

Husband's running stats fell this month. Mainly due to travel, playing in a work basketball league, and getting SCUBA certified. Dear The Shark, sorry to whoop your a$$ this month. Love, Moi. (Not that's it's a competition, because it's not.)

Jeggings

As part of my work responsibilities, I attended the opening of the new American Eagle in Manila. I expected a ribbon cutting and some pictures, but it was a full-out high society affair. My favorite part was the food--cupcakes, mini mushroom pies, french fries, tempura vegetables. And I discovered jeggings?!? At first I thought it was a joke like "jorts" (jean shorts). But apparently these are the norm in the US. Sadly, American Eagle doesn't carry "longs" here, so no jeggings for me.
I was still hungry afterwards.
Jeggings on the runway.
